How/What to Teach & Recording What Was Taught Each Year for E-Rate.
TEACHERS: You should do a complete lesson on just the REQUIRED topics at the top of your class page each year, either spreading them out to do at least one a quarter or doing them fairly early in the year. Use the lessons and resources on your grade level page, so that lessons & videos are not repeated. Repeating the videos is not bad, however, because many are so very powerful and worth seeing again.
It would be great if you could address all of the topics sometime throughout the year, as they are all important, but you don't need to do a formal lesson on each - only the ones we have assigned for your grade. It is acceptable to come up with your own lesson on your topics or modify the ones we have suggested. You can look through the links to free sites, interactivities, videos on the resource page or find your own.
Please indicate which lesson and videos you used on the Google Spreadsheet for that class. (The classes are distinguished by their graduation year.) If you addressed it, but only briefly and did not use one of the posted lessons or videos, just mark an "X" to indicate that it was addressed. All teachers are encouraged to remind students about good digital citizenship/online safety/online literacy when the topic arises, as when you are having them do an Internet search or something related happens in the news.
Resources: Common Sense Media & Netsmartz
We are using Common Sense Media as our main resource. However, Netsmartz is also an excellent site for resources. Both programs are divided into K-5, 6-8, 9-12. The resources, especially in Netsmartz, can be overlapped and done in any order. Both include videos. Common Sense's Videos are interviews. Netsmartz has interviews, as well as dramatic stories and cartoons with groups of characters (one for hs/ms and one for elem). Most videos for both programs can be both downloaded or viewed online.
Common Sense lessons are all 45 minutes and include handouts and discussion guides. The lessons are downloaded as pdfs. Netsmartz has a few PPT "Presentations" with embedded videos, as well as "activity cards" to download. The whole Presentation packet should be downloaded, and you will get a zipped file w/ the PPTs and videos in it. Both programs allow you to view the videos separately, so you can use them in your own lessons. Both programs have posters, "tips", and "agreements" for students to sign if you want to use them.
To help simplify, we have used Common Sense's format, dividing the lessons they have for their 9 topics between the grade levels, so they won't be repeated. You will find that we have not used all of their lessons. (Sometimes they have too many or too few for gr. 6-8 or 9-12 in a category.) If you find a better lesson that we have not included, please add it to your page. We have also included lessons/videos from Netsmartz to add variety and because they are excellent videos. There are other great resources, and these two sites may change in the future. Feel free to add resources you feel are good and to comment on the ones we have posted. We have also included alternative lesson ideas that utilize the videos or are ways to assess and involve students in creating with technology.
